The United States District Court for the District of Montana announces that the formal investiture of United States Magistrate Judge Timothy J. Cavan will take place December 1, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in the Snowy Mountain Courtroom on the Fifth Floor of the James F. Battin U.S. Courthouse in Billings, Montana. The proceeding is open to members of the bar and the public, and a reception will follow in the 4th floor courthouse lobby.

Chief United States District Judge Dana L. Christensen will preside over the proceeding, and the oath of office will be administered by United States District Judge Susan P. Watters. Speakers will include United States Attorney Michael W. Cotter and Anthony R. Gallagher, Executive Director of the Federal Defenders of Montana.

Mr. Cavan, of Billings, was selected from a highly qualified group of finalists compiled by a court-appointed merit selection panel.  He comes to the court after serving most recently as an Assistant United States Attorney.

The District of Montana has three full-time magistrate judge positions, located in Missoula, Billings, and Great Falls.  Mr. Cavan will become the fourth magistrate judge to serve on a full-time basis in the Billings Division.
